I wrote on 3 Jan 2020 (link) about the NIAID contract intended to establish an innovative Chemistry Center for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (CC4CARB). The formal solicitation has now gone live and can be found here. The deadline for applications is 16 Mar 2020. Get to it!
In parallel, there is a superb Wall Street Journal podcast dated 13 Jan 2020 about the economic crisis for antibiotic developers. Go here to find it. It’s just under 20 minutes long and tells the full history of antibiotics going from blockbusters in the 1970s and 1980s to bust in the 2000s. In particular, the podcast discusses the way that Achaogen collapsed (link for additional notes; see also the recent blog on Melinta’s recent bankruptcy).
That bit of cognitive dissonance fully recognized, I am encouraged that the work towards effective reward mechanisms continues unabated. A good example is tomorrow’s Duke-Margolis workshop entitled “Exploring Opportunities to Reform Antimicrobial Payment and Post-Market Incentives” (link, see also the meetings list below).

- 17-25 Oct 2020 (Annecy, France): Interdisciplinary Course on Antibiotics and Resistance (ICARe). This is a soup-to-nuts residential course on antibiotics, antibiotic resistance, and antibiotic R&D. The course is very intense, very detailed, and gets rave reviews. The date is set for 2020 and the program will ultimately appear here. Registration is limited to 40 students and opens 15 Mar 2020.
