Just out is a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA 75D301-21-R-71738) from CDC with a 13 Jan 2021 deadline for white papers. The webpage for the BAA is here and you’ll need to look at the .pdf of the solicitation to understand all the possibilities. The AMR-related research areas include calls for proposals that would:
- Improve identification of bacteria plasmids to understand AR epidemiology and ecology
- Build the ability to perform whole genome sequencing in PulseNet regions, including Asia Pacific and Middle East, to improve detection and surveillance of emerging multidrug-resistant enteric (gut) bacteria
- Estimate the prevalence of antifungal-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus in low- and middle-income countries
- Evaluate samples for colonization and relatedness with multidrug-resistant organisms
- Evaluate IPC Iinfection Prevention and Control) metrics among patients colonized with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)
- Assess antibiotic stewardship practices internationally
- Review IPC guidelines, policies, and practices implemented in healthcare facilities
- Develop operational guidance for hospital IPC committees
- Develop a curated, international antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea sample bank
Other possibilities in the solicitation include work on infant and maternal health surveillance, strengthening the Laboratory Response Network (LRN), and work on both influenza and COVID-19.

- CARB-X recently announced that their existing resources will be reserved to fund their existing portfolio (75 total awards, and counting and they conclude contracting on prior rounds), including future options on those awards. New rounds from CARB-X will occur only after new funding is obtained in 2021.
- The Global AMR R&D Hub’s dynamic dashboard (link) summarizes funders and projects by geography, stage, and more.
- It’s not a funder, but AiCuris’ AiCubator offers incubator support to very early stage projects. Read more about it here.

- 16-24 Oct 2021 (Annecy, France): Interdisciplinary Course on Antibiotics and Resistance (ICARe). This is a soup-to-nuts residential course on antibiotics, antibiotic resistance, and antibiotic R&D. The course is very intense, very detailed, and gets rave reviews. Registration is here and is limited to 40 students. Bonus feature: For obvious reasons, the course didn’t happen in 2020!
